The Life of Eurydice Guzmán (2019), Marineiro das Montañas (2021) and Firebrand (2023)
Line of Events
Under the fiery sky of the road along the coast of Ceara, the Destino Motel is the scene of dangerous games of desire, power and violence. One night, the arrival of young Eraldo completely changes the daily life of this place. This is Karim Ainouz's sixth film, the world premiere of which took place at the Cannes Film Festival, after "Madame Sata" (2002), "O Abismo Proteado" (2011), "The Invisibles". Karim Ainouz's latest erotic thriller Motel Fate is a delightful cinematic mix of desire, sex and crime.
This year, the Destino Motel competed for both the Palme d'Or and the Strange Palme
Ainuz is a favorite of the Cannes Film Festival: so far, six of his films have premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The Destino Motel is a seedy, neon-lit sexy motel located somewhere on the coast of Brazil. The hotel is managed by Elias and his partner Diana, who are indifferent to the world of sex and crime inside the motel. They are so caught up in this world that Elias is often considered an autoerotic voyeur, covering up criminal activities to keep the police at bay.
Soon it becomes a part of the couple's life, breaking the established order
This is a place where no guest stays long and no one asks questions. One day, a young and attractive Eraldo arrives at the motel with his criminal baggage. Then the three main characters go into the third and final act of this strange film noir, reaching their destiny. The film is brilliantly shot, with tense, uncomfortable close-ups of characters' faces stuck in their situations and sweaty bodies full of desire.
It's worth watching
Close-ups of Eraldo's naked body portray him as both strong and fragile. Diana is tender and impatiently waiting for someone to give her a glimmer of hope to avoid an abusive relationship with Elias. The color palette of the film smoothly transitions from neon red to blue: red symbolizes the carnal desires of the inhabitants, and blue represents the terrible feeling of emptiness that follows euphoria. Motel Destino focuses on raw emotions and carnal desires, masterfully captured through brilliant cinematography, and the lack of world-building at the beginning seems deliberate, giving the audience a sense of detachment from society...
