During the war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a little girl, which brings an irreversible change to the lives of the couple and the people whose paths the child crosses. Here is Michel Hazanavicius's first animated film. This is the best 2024 release I have seen so far this year, and we are in mid-December 2024. It tells a story that takes place in Poland during World War II, almost like a popular film story. Most of the action takes place in the forest, which is typical of the popular stories mentioned above, and it revolves around a couple of woodcutters who adopt a Jewish girl who was thrown from a deportation train that passed through their forest. Her father abandoned her to save her from certain death in Auschwitz. I won't go into the details of the plot so you can see for yourself, I just want to add that the film comes to a deeply philosophical conclusion. On the technical side, everything is also done perfectly. The visuals of the film are brilliantly done. The cartoon style is dark, not too detailed nor too rough, and it mostly depicts scenes in low light with dominant shades of gray, which highlights the horrors of the most infamous war and mass destruction in human history. And then there is the soundtrack, which is sublime: The music, the sound effects, the narration and the voice acting (I saw the original version in French), all perfectly fit to present this gem of a film. In conclusion, it is one of the best films that deals with the subject of racism and the Shoah in particular, with its artistic process and the story it wants to tell.
